Department of Economic Theory

About this department: Department of Economic Theory was created at the end of 2002 as a response to social needs of deeper understanding the economic changes taking place in society, in order to develop theoretical foundations of modern social and economic transformations.
Since it’s founding the Department is headed by Andriy Hrytsenko, Doctor of Sciences (Economics), Professor, Corresponding member of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Fields of Research: • institutional architectonics and transformation regularities of economic systems;
• development of society in socio-economic space and time;
• theory of value;
• institute of trust in economic space-time coordinates;
• economic theory as a way of thinking and its institutional capacity;
• methodology of social and economic forecasting;
• paradigm of monetary policy in the context of globalization;
• consistent patterns of reproductive dynamics and cyclical development of economic systems.

Personalities: Research results on problems of institutional architectonics and dynamics of economic transformation:
• a new research area was formed: the study of institutional architectonics as the fundamental structure of institutions, consisting of rules, norms, stereotypes, traditions, institutions and other social formations in accordance with the esthetic essence and the general plan of holistic social system construction;
• subject, basic regularities (the equilibrium law, the averaging law, the law of the golden section) and methodology of institutional architectonics and their significance for the institutional transformation practices were defined;
• architectonics of the basic structures of the economic system that includes the property institution, institute of economic management and institute of distribution was elucidated. It was disclosed that the mechanism of institutional change involves a stable institutional framework, institutional innovations, the destruction of institutions and ways of these components interaction;
• it was established that the institutional unit of time is a generation in the broad sense (people, technology, ideas, etc.), it reflects the discretion and the quantum nature of institutional change and an opportunity to assess the duration of transformation.
Research results on problems of hierarchical and network structures in the development of economic systems:
• investigation revealed that hierarchy and network are not different, self-sufficient and independent, but mutually assumed and mutually dependent structures, whose interconnection has been developing throughout the history taking different shapes in the global and local institutional spaces;
• it was found that the main structural and organizational problems of society at the XXI century is the contradiction between hierarchical and network connections, which manifests itself at different levels as the contradiction of necessity and freedom, order and spontaneity of social and economic activities, imperiousness and democracy, inductility and informationality, planned and market economy, socio-economic equality and separation, integration and fragmentation of the various components of society, self-worth and progress, certainty and uncertainty of socio-economic development;
• it was shown that the generalities of the functioning of the information and network based society essentially differs from those of the industrial society, and the increasingly network based social ties lead to the formation of the networking man and not only open up huge prospects, but also creates fundamental risks of fragmentation and decay of human society and personality;
• classification of economic goods, which distinguishes ordinary, network and hierarchical good was introduced, showing the differences of these goods mechanisms of functioning.
Research results on issues of institution of trust in coordinates of economic space-time:
? the concept of trust as a basic institution of the market economy, which manifests itself in the entire system of economic relations and defines features of its spatial and temporal dynamics, was developed, as well as periodization of the main historical stages in development of institution of trust;
? the internal structure and essence of trust in the economic sphere was disclosed. The trust investigated as the relationship to the actors and institutions, that expresses the confidence measure of their behavior accordance to the impression of their activities, which through different forms of joint-divided activities are included to the process of the goal achievement with no reasoning of the costs reimbursement, equivalence and profitability;
? it was justified that the economy of trust is a mixed economy, which organically combines private and public interests with its core in the public goods market;
? it was shown that the trust and distrust in society are influenced by many factors, and at each historical stage their level varies depending on the political and economic situation, social and institutional factors, such as coercion, power, uncertainty, doubt, risk expectations;
? the features of the institution of trust in the economic and monetary space of Ukraine were defined with the proposition of indicators for empirical estimation of trust in the economic system.
Research results on issues of institutional transformation of socio-economic system of Ukraine:
? the theoretical foundation for research in institutional transformation of economic system was proposed with its basis in logical-historical methodology that combines: 1) disclosure of the logical and historical vector of economic phenomena and processes development; 2) consideration of historical peculiarities of structural changes in the economic system under conditions of inversion-type transformation; 3) implementation of the principles and laws of architectonics to balancing correction of institutional transformations;
? the classification of social institutions was renewed through the division of primary (basic and vital) and derivative social institutions; it was revealed that there are no entirely institutions of development, but there are institutions that can serve their functions as a tool of development or that of destruction;
? it was shown that the most common form of manifestation of the contradictions of joint-divided relations in the economy is the contradiction between globalization, which is implemented through information technology, financial and economic mechanisms, and localized economic activity, that has spatial and territorial form. It is shown that the solution of those contradictions should be based upon gradual interstate integration, regionalization and decentralization of power, financial and organizational autonomization of non-profit sector’s structures;
? peculiarities of institutional transformations of Ukraine were investigated in terms of combination of inversion-type market reforms and globalization of the economy, which led to the formation of basic economic destruction as Ukrainian economic system adapted to the different fragments of the world economy as a raw resources affix without first creating a sustainable national market and building appropriate institutional architectonics;
? it was disclosed that basic destruction of Ukrainian economy enables systemic contradictions by merging of economic growth with the deepening economic disparities. Arrangements for deregulation of the national economy with specifics of inversion-type economic development were indicated, as well as the program for institutional adjustment that is needed to overcome the crisis and to result the transition to sustainable development.

Research: Experts of the Department initiated the study of reproductive dynamics of economic systems in the context of relationship between activity and institutions, which based on previous theoretical and methodological research reveals the basic methodological principles and theoretical concepts to investigate reproductive dynamics of socio-economic system of Ukraine, the laws of economic and institutional development of the global economy.
By clarification of the content of reproduction of property institutions, forms of economic activity and distribution with relation to cyclic recurrence of socio-economic dynamics and replication of basic institutions the peculiarities of reproductive dynamics, institutional destruction and institutional mechanisms to overcome reproductive imbalances in the economy of Ukraine will be disclosed. It will give the opportunity to determine the conditions for transition to reconstructive type of reproductive dynamics, which combines a simple, narrowed and expanded reproduction of various components of the economic system. This reproduction type changes the measure and criteria for socio-economic development, that activates the potential to use negative forms of economic dynamics (the crisis, depression, destructive growth) for the qualitative restructuring of the economic system in order to improve the stability of the socio-economic system of Ukraine and achieve sustainable development.
