The Institute of Economic Forecasting of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was created in 1997 (Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine "On the Creation of the Institute of Economic Forecasting" of July 19, 1997 No. 772 and Resolution of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine "On the Creation of the Institute of Economic Forecasting" of September 5, 1997 No. 298) as a major national research center to investigate the following issues:
- forecasting of socio-economic development
- innovative development
- competitive policy
- economic growth and structural changes in the economy
- monetary and agrarian policies
- development and regulation of financial markets
The main areas of activity of the institution at the time of its establishment:
- analysis and forecast of the state of Ukraine's economy during the period of development of its statehood and the emergence of a new economic model
- solving the problems related to social and market reforms
- scientific substantiation of ways and practical development of the tools of macroeconomic stabilization policy and economic growth policy in conditions of economic instability
In 2005, by Resolution No. 139 of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine of July 6, 2005, the Institute of Economic Forecasting of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was renamed the State Organization "Institute for Economics and Forecasting of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine"
Since the establishment of the Institute, it has been headed by an academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Valeriy Heyets
